Why Philanthropy Matters

How the Wealthy Give and What it Means to Our Economic Well-Being

Monday, April 8, 2013

7:30 PM – 8:45 PM

Featuring

Dr. Zoltan J. Acs

Philanthropy has long been a distinctive feature of American culture, but its crucial role in the economic well-being of the nation – and the world – has remained largely unexplored. Acs' book, Why Philanthropy Matters, explores philanthropy's critical influence on the free-market system and demonstrates how American philanthropy could serve as a model for the productive reinvestment of wealth in other countries. Factoring in philanthropic cycles that help balance the economy, Acs offers a richer picture of capitalism, and a more accurate backdrop for considering policies that would promote the capitalist system for the good of all.

Acs is a professor at George Mason University's School of Public Policy and Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship and Public Policy. He is coeditor and founder of Small Business Economics, the leading entrepreneurship and small business publication in the world. His policy initiatives take a broad view of public policy encompassing the individual, the economy, international aspects, and social policy. His recently published book, Why Philanthropy Matters: How the Wealthy Give and What it Means to Our Economic Well-Being, takes an in-depth look at philanthropy as an underappreciated force in capitalism.

The event will be held at GMU's Arlington Campus, 113 Founders Hall.
