POSITION: Project Director
DEPARTMENT: SHAPE America/Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Cooperative Agreement Project

Responsible for managing all aspects of SHAPE America’s cooperative agreement with CDC including implementation of the work plan. Serves as primary contact to CDC.


Reports to SHAPE America Senior Director of Programs.

Nature and Scope of Work:

✔ Provides oversight and coordination of SHAPE America’s Cooperative Agreement project activities. Coordinates and monitors the implementation of all cooperative agreement project goals, objectives, activities, and evaluation requirements in the CDC-approved work plan.
✔ Serves as primary liaison to CDC. Builds and maintains a relationship with SHAPE America’s Project Officer and other staff at the CDC School Health Branch.
✔ Builds and maintains relationships with CDC-funded partner organizations to collaborate in cooperative agreement-related initiatives and meetings.
✔ Builds and maintains relationships with other national physical activity partners and initiatives in order to collaborate on national physical activity/physical education-related activities.
✔ Provides leadership and coordination for the cooperative agreement project team. Works collaboratively with the CDC project officer, CDC School Health Branch staff, SHAPE America’s project team, SHAPE America staff, CDC-funded grantees, and SHAPE America members to implement the project work plan.
✔ Regularly communicates with the SHAPE America Senior Director of Programs and other program staff about needs, ideas, accomplishments, opportunities, and concerns regarding the cooperative agreement project.
✔ Regularly communicates/meets with the project team and keep them apprised of activities, work plan modifications and accomplishments. Meets with subcommittees or individual members of the workgroup, and other staff as needed, to focus on specific project activities.
✔ Collaborates with the evaluator and CDC to develop an evaluation plan and implement evaluation activities that align with project goals, objectives, and activities. Collaborates to identify and translate meaningful data for measuring and reporting on project success.
✔ Supervises the program assistant.
✔ Promotes project activities and accomplishments through SHAPE America’s internal and external communication channels.
✔ Manages all project records and complete all project reports. Maintains project files, monitors reporting deadlines, adheres to report requirements, and collaborates with relevant staff to write and submit reports.
✔ Monitors research and best practices in physical education and school physical activity programs and maintains extensive field contacts in order to assemble and represent the needs, views, and interests of physical educators and school physical activity professionals.
✔ Coordinates content expertise and technical assistance to CDC-funded partners, SHAPE America members and member leaders, staff, and partners related to youth/family physical activity and school physical education and physical activity programs.
✔ Other duties may be assigned to this position.

Job Requirements
Bachelor’s degree with at least 3 years of program management experience and a minimum of 5 years of experience teaching physical education. Excellent written and oral communication skills, excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills, customer service orientation, strong organizational skills, computer proficiency, project management, management and supervisory ability, and an ability to balance multiple tasks, work independently and problem-solve.


This position is based in our Reston, VA headquarters. Telework is available one day per week after six months of employment. Occasional Travel is required for meetings and the annual convention.


Monday-Friday, 37.5 hours per week
