Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors’ National Association (SMACNA), a construction industry trade association, seeks Legislative Affairs Assistant Director for its Capitol Hill Office. The Assistant Director is responsible for representing the interests of SMACNA’s membership before the Congress and other government agencies and offices as well as engaging in grassroots activation and outreach.

SMACNA is an international trade association representing the interests of construction contractors engaged in the sheet metal, heating, ventilating and air conditioning industry.

Principle Responsibilities:

• Represent the Association in meetings with members of Congress, personal Congressional staff, committee staff, government officials, coalition meetings and political events

• Participate in development of the Association's long - and short-term advocacy strategy

• Engage in Grassroots Activation and Outreach

• Research, develop, and write issue papers, legislative testimony and regulatory comments.

• Provide accurate verbal and written feedback on such meetings to CEO, Director and other appropriate association staff

• Communicate and coordinate with other departments, members and chapters as necessary on department activities and to advance program efforts and initiatives

• Assist with activities related to the political action committee

Competencies/Experience/Skills Required:

• Minimum of 5 years of experience in similar positions, preferably within the construction industry

• Relevant university degree or master’s level degree

• Deep understanding of and experience from the US political processes at federal and state level

• Excellent command of the English language – verbal and written

• Results driven, team-oriented and socially skilled networker – great at building relationships

• Strong organizational skills as well as demonstrated experience of leveraging the network of relationships

• Previous expertise interacting with DOL, PBGC and U.S. Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions and U.S. House Committee on U.S. Workforce highly desired

• Expertise with health care, multiemployer pension plans, construction issues and other relevant legislation highly desired

• Must be a self-starter and team player with ability to coordinate with national and local associates
